About 3H AC
Proudly Serving Tampa Bay for Five Decades
Our founder, Thomas H. Hebert, started the company as an inventor and engineer of energy-efficient HVAC products in 1972. In 2003, Sarah, Brian, and Tom formed 3H AC. Brian, with an engineering, research and development, and manufacturing background, learned from working and experimenting with Tom since childhood.
The three took over 3H and successfully grew the business through the 2008 housing crash/recession, focusing on custom homes and service, new construction, commercial construction and service, pool heaters, heat recovery, and geothermal. We have also worked in ventilation and heating and the foam industry.
We are still innovators in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning industry (HVAC). We believe in quality workmanship and customer service to provide the highest quality AC repair & HVAC services in the area. Getting the right HVAC system and equipment takes strategy. HVAC Frequently Asked Questions
HVAC Questions
What is HVAC?
HVAC is short for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. HVAC is most often used to depict the whole heating and cooling system consisting of the duct work, air filters, humidification controls, and registers.
What regular maintenance do heating and cooling systems require?
The most important part of HVAC maintenance aspect is maintaining unrestricted air flows. Dust, dirt, and debris are an HVAC system’s worst enemies. Whether it’s an indoor or outdoor unit, you must keep all filters clean and heat exchangers and coils free of restrictions.
We recommend that your heating and cooling system be checked and serviced twice a year; ideally a spring and autumn tune-up. Also we recommend that you change your filter regularly, depending on the type of filter you have. This alone can eliminate many of the most common problems that need fixing and can significantly reduce the likelihood of a serious breakdown.
How do I know if I have an existing warranty on my AC system?
Locate the label on the outer surface of the equipment for a manufacture date. If the equipment is less than 10 years old it may have a warranty for residential and under 5 years for commercial, but also may not based on the model. Warranty terms and conditions change by manufacturer and the installing company. 3HAC Experts Heating & Air Conditioning can verify the warranty status of your heating and cooling system.
Is sound an issue for heating and cooling?
Yes. Loud heating and cooling equipment contribute to sound pollution. Although no financial savings are tied to lower sound levels, the sound rating of a cooling system can have a considerable effect on comfort and enjoyment of your home. The sound level of an air conditioner or heat pump depends on a variety of factors, such as the age and make of the unit, and whether the compressor is insulated or not can contribute to the amount of noise it makes.
How can I increase the efficiency and life of my AC unit?
A few quick tips:
- Clean and replace your filters frequently.
- Your system will heat and cool more evenly when the blower is in the “on” position. The blower provides constant air movement throughout the home, and allows for better filtration.
- Install shades, drapes, shutters, or screens on windows that are exposed to extreme sunlight to keep room temperatures at moderate levels.
At what temperature should I set my thermostat?
Temperature settings depend on the time of year and your personal preferences. In the summer, the average temperature setting is 75°-80°. In the winter 68°-72° is the norm. Remember, when leaving your house; try to avoid drastic temperature changes. Do not set your temperature back more than 5°; this will cause your unit to work harder to achieve the desired temperature setting.
How often should I change my HVAC filters?
For optimal performance, it’s recommended to change your HVAC air filters every 1 to 3 months. The frequency depends on factors like the type of filter, your indoor air quality needs, and whether you have pets. Regular filter changes ensure proper airflow, improve energy efficiency, and maintain indoor air quality. If you’re unsure, our experts at 3H AC can guide you in determining the best schedule for your specific HVAC system and living environment.
What are the benefits of regular HVAC maintenance?
Scheduled maintenance helps to ensure optimal efficiency, which can lead to lower energy bills. It also extends the lifespan of your system, reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns, and maintains healthy indoor air quality by addressing dust, debris, and potential mold growth. By investing in regular HVAC maintenance, you’re not only saving money in the long run but also ensuring a reliable and comfortable environment for your home or business.
What signs indicate that my AC unit might need repair?
Unusual noises, inconsistent cooling or heating, higher energy bills, and poor indoor air quality are common indicators your system needs repair. If you notice any of these issues, it’s advisable to contact HVAC professionals like 3H AC, to assess the system’s condition and provide the necessary repairs to ensure optimal performance and comfort in your home or business.
How can I reduce energy consumption and lower my utility bills?
Start by setting your thermostat to an energy-efficient temperature and utilizing programmable settings to match your schedule. Regular HVAC maintenance, such as cleaning or replacing air filters, ensures optimal system efficiency. Consider upgrading to energy-efficient appliances and lighting, and make the most of natural ventilation during moderate weather. These steps, combined with the expertise of 3H AC, can help you achieve significant energy savings while maintaining a comfortable environment.
What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?
The ideal temperature setting for energy efficiency and comfort typically falls within the range of 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 22 degrees Celsius) during the heating season and around 72 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 24 degrees Celsius) in the cooling season. However, individual preferences and factors such as humidity and insulation can influence the ideal temperature for your specific circumstances. Consulting with HVAC professionals like 3H AC can help you determine the best setting for your home or business.
Can I modify my older HVAC system for better efficiency?
With the ability to preset temperature adjustments based on your schedule, you can optimize heating and cooling to align with your daily routine. This not only ensures a consistently comfortable environment but also reduces energy consumption by preventing unnecessary heating or cooling when you’re away. Experience cost savings and personalized comfort with the convenience of a programmable thermostat for your HVAC system.
What are the differences between ductless and traditional HVAC systems?
Traditional systems use ductwork to distribute air throughout the building, requiring space for installation. On the other hand, ductless systems, also known as mini-split systems, don’t need ducts. They consist of indoor air handlers and an outdoor compressor unit, offering more flexibility in installation and allowing for zone-based cooling and heating. Each option has its advantages, and the choice depends on factors like space, efficiency, and budget.
What are key indicators that my commercial HVAC system needs service?
Key indicators that your commercial HVAC system may need servicing include inconsistent temperature control, poor air quality, unusual noises, or an increase in energy bills. If you notice these signs, it’s advisable to schedule professional maintenance with experts like 3H AC. Our team can promptly diagnose and address any issues to ensure your commercial space remains comfortable, efficient, and conducive to a productive environment.
What steps can I take to prolong the life span of my HVAC system?
To extend the lifespan of your HVAC system, regular maintenance is key. Change air filters regularly, keep the outdoor unit clear of debris, ensure proper ventilation around indoor units, and schedule professional inspections annually.
Are there government incentives available for energy efficient HVAC systems?
Yes, there are often government incentives and rebates available for energy-efficient HVAC systems. These incentives vary based on your location and the specific programs offered by federal, state, or local governments. These incentives aim to promote energy conservation and reduce environmental impact, making it financially beneficial for homeowners and businesses to invest in energy-efficient HVAC solutions. It’s advisable to check with local energy authorities or your HVAC provider to explore potential incentives available in your area.
How do I know if my ventilation system is properly sized for my property?
Determining if your ventilation system is properly sized for your property involves evaluating factors like the size of your space, the number of occupants, and the specific ventilation requirements. An HVAC professional, such as those at 3H AC, can perform a detailed assessment to ensure that your ventilation system effectively circulates fresh air, controls humidity, and maintains a comfortable indoor environment.
What factors should I consider when choosing a new HVAC system?
When selecting a new HVAC system, consider your property’s size, insulation, and layout to determine the appropriate system capacity. Energy efficiency ratings, such as SEER and AFUE, should guide your choice for cost-effective operation. Additionally, explore features like programmable thermostats and zoning options to maximize comfort and control. Consulting with 3H AC’s experts can help you make an informed decision tailored to your specific needs and preferences.
What is the ideal temperature setting for energy efficiency and comfort?
The ideal temperature setting for energy efficiency and comfort typically falls within the range of 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 22 degrees Celsius) during the heating season and around 72 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 24 degrees Celsius) in the cooling season. However, individual preferences and factors such as humidity and insulation can influence the ideal temperature for your specific circumstances. Consulting with HVAC professionals like 3H AC can help you determine the best setting for your home or business.

About Air Quality
How do I know which indoor air quality product is right for me?
Every person and every home entails a different comfort need. The threshold of irritancy and triggers that affect people’s health and comfort combine to determine the proper solutions. High threshold levels may require simple solutions like a better air filter. Low threshold levels may require an air purification system for the reduction of triggers and irritants. With a Home Health Report Card, Service Experts can help you decide which indoor air improvement products are right for you.
How can I eliminate indoor odors?
Many people try to cover up indoor odors by spraying air fresheners or lighting candles. Unfortunately, these tactics only mask the odors, they don’t get rid of them. These remedies may in fact negatively affect indoor air quality from chemicals that cause allergic reactions or eye irritation for homeowners.
Bacteria, dust mites, animal dander, cat saliva and mold may also be roots of your home’s odor problem. One method to purify the air is integrating germicidal (UV) lights in your home, which helps kill odors and inhibit the growth of biological contaminants, sterilizing surfaces in the HVAC system. They also purify the air, preventing the growth of contaminants. The UV lights are installed to work with your home comfort system.
Sometimes poor ventilation contributes to unpleasant odors. Moisture condensation on walls windows and stagnate air are signs of poor ventilation. A qualified 3HAC Service Experts technician can inspect your home comfort system to determine if this is an issue that should be addressed. The technician can also inform you how to solve the ventilation system’s ability to correctly circulate and ventilate indoor air.
How healthy is my indoor air?
According to studies created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, exposure to air pollutants indoors can be 100 times higher than outdoors. Frequent dusting and vacuuming can help reduce the amount of dust and dust mites present in your home. However, not all airborne particles can be eliminated. Filtration devices can help eliminate particles that are too small to be caught by a vacuum. Some filtration devices include UV light units, air filters, energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) and electronic air cleaners. A Home Health Report Card from Service Experts will provide the information about which indoor air improvement devices are right for you. To receive a Home Health Report Card and personal air quality consultation 3HAC Experts at 813-535-6608.
Why do I need to change my filter regularly?
Regular filter replacement helps your heating and cooling system operate at peak levels and improves indoor air quality. It is important to change filters regularly to ensure proper air flow and to keep your home free from dust, allergens and germs. Depending on the type of filter you have, you may require weekly or monthly filter replacements. Your 3HAC Experts service or installation technician will recommend the ideal filters and replacement schedules for your unit(s).
How can I prevent mold growth and maintain indoor air quaity?
Regularly inspect and address any water leaks or moisture sources, as mold thrives in damp environments. Ensure proper ventilation in bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas prone to moisture. Regularly clean and replace HVAC filters, use dehumidifiers if needed, and keep indoor spaces well-ventilated. Additionally, professional indoor air quality assessments and HVAC maintenance from experts like 3H AC can help you create a healthier living environment for you and your family.
How does humidity impact indoor comfort and air quality?
Humidity plays a crucial role in indoor comfort and air quality. Excessive humidity can lead to a muggy and uncomfortable environment, while insufficient humidity can cause dryness and irritation. Moreover, high humidity levels encourage mold growth and dust mites, negatively affecting air quality. Balancing humidity through proper HVAC systems ensures a healthier, more comfortable indoor space.
About Air Conditioning
How do I know if my AC unit is big enough?
Bigger isn’t always better; it’s performance and efficiency that count. Before purchasing a replacement system you should always make sure your system is sized properly to match your needs and budget. Your 3H AC Expert will thoroughly assess your home and comfort requirements to determine the proper size and make the appropriate recommendation.
How long do air conditioning systems last?
Air conditioners usually last around 15 years, sometimes longer with good maintenance.
Can I just replace my outdoor AC unit?
Yes, you can replace just the outside unit but you will need to find one of similar age that is compatible with your air handler on the inside. Your money may actually be better spent on a new, more energy-efficient air conditioner.
How you you know if your AC compressor is bad?
If your outside AC unit is making screeching or clattering noises, not coming on at all, or your breaker is tripping repeatedly, chances are good your AC compressor is having electrical problems. The compressor repair could be something as simple as a blown fuse, a capacitor, frayed wire, or it could be an issue with the motor. Give us a call and we will walk you through some steps to see if it is a simple fix.
How do you know if your AC has blown a fuse?
If there is no air blowing from your air conditioner, it could be a blown fuse or a tripped breaker panel. If you flip the breaker switch back to the ON position and the breaker trips again, please give us a call. AC fuses are not expensive parts to replace, but a skilled technician should do the work, as there is a lot of electricity going to the AC unit and there may be something else wrong that is causing the fuse to blow. AC fuses can last 20 years or more.
Is it okay to run an AC 24/7? How often should an AC run?
It is bad for your AC to run all day, primarily because your electric bill will be very high! It also puts a strain on the system to run without a break. A properly maintained unit will run for about 15 or 20 minutes until the indoor temperature reaches the setting on your thermostat, and then it will shut off until the temperature rises above the setting again. During heat waves, the system may cycle on and off more often than more moderate temps, and this is OK. But if your system never takes a break, give us a call and we will perform a complete system check to make sure your AC and ducts are working properly. We will also check your ductwork and insulation to see if you are losing air in the attic, or losing your cool or heat due to a lack of insulation.
What should I do if I hear unusual noises coming from my air conditioner?
If you notice unusual noises emanating from your air conditioner, it’s important not to ignore them. Unusual sounds such as grinding, banging, or hissing could indicate underlying issues that require professional attention. To ensure your system’s longevity and efficient operation, it’s recommended to promptly contact 3H AC’s expert technicians in Tampa. We’ll diagnose the problem and provide the necessary solutions to keep your cooling system running smoothly and quietly.
